Testimonial

I want to tell you again that I enjoyed the fall foliage tour I took with you immensely and learned a great deal, I had a really great time. I just sent in a deposit for the Acadia tour I remember you told us that Acadia filled up pretty fast and I want to make sure I get in on it. I think you may be seeing much more of me this coming year."

Itinerary

October 7: Home - Portland, OR

Oregon: The Northwest

The group will meet at the Portland, Oregon airport, where we will load up the van, and begin the tour.

October 8: Columbia River Gorge

We visit the National Scenic Area, The Columbia River Gorge, which has the highest concentration of waterfalls in the country. Visit Crown Point for an overview, then LaTourel Falls, Bridal Veil, Shepard's Dell, Multnomah Falls, and Horsetail Falls.

October 9 - October 10: Northwest Oregon Coast

Today we travel west to the North Oregon Coast: Canon Beach, Haystack Rock, Hug Point, Ecola Park. Our goal will be to photograph during at least one low tide when the coast's incredible geological formations and tide pools are most accessible. We'll overnight at Canon Beach, catching the morning light. Frequently fog or mist adds another dimension to our photography. Returning to Portland to photograph Portland's famous japanese gardens, considered to be the most authentic outside of Japan.

October 11 - October 13: Redmond - Mitchell

Oregon: The Northwest

Today we head east of the cascades to Redmond, stopping to photograph the intimate Little Ziz Zag Falls before heading up to historic Timberline Lodge for lunch, 7,000 feet up on the side of Mt. Hood. We’ll then travel along the dramatic Deschutes River Canyon, stopping to photograph the basalt cliffs in Cove Pallisades State Park. We proceed a short distance to our hotel and dinner in Redmond.

Up early, we’ll catch the morning light on spectacular Smith Rock before heading east to the old town of Mitchell where we’ll stay at the historic (read rustic) Oregon Hotel. After lunch we’ll visit The Blue Basin in the Sheep Rock section of The John Day Fossil Beds, then catch the late afternoon light on the incredible Painted Hills section of John Day. Dinner in Mitchell, possibly at the delightfully down home Sidewalk Café.
The following morning we again visit the Painted hills under dramatically different lighting conditions before returning to Redmond where we will spend the day photographing in the Newberry volcano, site of Paulina Falls and the Big Obsidian Flow. A visit to The High Desert Museum will put everything in perspective. Redmond is east of the Cascade Mountains and has a dramatically different and rugged landscape compared to west of the Cascades.

October 14: McKenzie Pass - Salem

This morning we will visit The Newberry Lava Fields Monument with it’s panoramic view from atop a 500 foot cinder cone over a lunar like landscape where astronauts once trained for the US space program . We’ll then head west again to the delightful town of Sisters where we’ll have lunch at the historic Bronco Billy’s Café before heading through the lava fields at McKenzie Pass . The breathtaking view from the top of the pass takes in The Three Sisters, Mt. Washington, Mt. Jefferson , and numerous other volcanoes. Continuing to Salem we’ll make numerous stops along the wild and beautiful McKenzie River, site of some spectacular waterfalls. Dinner at the funky Kozy Korner en route to our hotel in Salem.

October 15: Portland

Today we return to Portland but not before spending the day in Silver Falls State Park. You may well think we’ve saved the best for last when you see the geologic wonders the park has to offer. It has been said that if this state park were anywhere other than Oregon, it would be one of our national parks. Lunch at the historic South Falls Lodge before returning to Portland via the fascinating towns of Silverton and Mt. Angel (displaced from Bavaria!).

October 16: Portland - Home

Depart for home.
